At What Stage May Your Or Your Company Require An Employee Assistance Program?

An example:

Meet Dave …..

Dave is 52 years old, and has worked at your company for 5 years in the role of IT Manager.

Dave is very well respected in the workplace, pleasant to other staff members, diligent and reliable.  He always completes his work on time and presents accurate weekly reports to management.  His other responsibilities include direct line management of three IT Officers and liaison with clients external to the organisation.

Over the past six weeks you have noticed some changes in Dave’s work pattern.  Your colleagues have also reported some differences that they have noticed.  No-one has expressed a direct concern but there are rumblings of dissatisfaction with Dave’s work performance.

The following signs have been seen, heard or noticed:

  • Frequently late for work – this is out of character
  • His usual sharp and neat appearance is now slightly dishevelled
  • He has been late with his reports 4 out of the past 6 weeks
  • The presentation of his reports is sloppy by Dave’s usual standards
  • He has been irritable and short with his colleagues and clients – this is out of character
  • He has withdrawn from all social interactions through the working day, choosing instead to sit at his desk alone

You have a confidential conversation with Dave and he tells you that his marriage is breaking down after 20 years and he is devastated.

Are you skilled enough as a manger or employer to support Dave through this, whilst ensuring his work performance isn’t affected?  Or would an experienced Practitioner from an external Employee Assistance Program be best placed to support both you and your employee?

At the Career Development Centre, our trained professional Psychologists and Counsellors are available via Employee Assistance Programs  to help both you and your employees achieve a positive result, remain effective and keep your company and staff morale moving forward.
